A
Tribe Called Quest? The Roots? The Digable Planets/Shabazz Palaces binary? All
goddamned pretenders to the jazz-rap throne. Camae Ayewa and her friends
(Elucid, Pink Siifu, lojii) fill up their backpacks with poetry-slam rhymes
delivered in THAT drawl from the blessed bloodline of select Philly hip-hop
queens. And then there’s the softly foreboding production—their streets fogged
by overdubbed and flanged vocals that twist trap-rappers’ norms, their shrines
shrouded in the smoke of fluttering percussion and bell-like organs. A swift,
oddly comforting half hour of Afrofuturism.(Treblzine)
